Moving your pets to Hawaii can be very stressful, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s very important that you plan ahead in order to make your transition with your pets a smooth one. The State of Hawaii is rabies free and therefore has strict regulations for moving animals to Hawaii, so it is important for you to know and follow the process in order to avoid problems when you arrive.

Prior proper planning will make your move seamless and a lot less stressful for you and your beloved pet. You will need a minimum of 120 days prior to arrival in the State of Hawaii to prepare your pet for entry and to avoid quarantine. Pets need to arrive at the destination airport here in Hawaii early enough in the afternoon to pass through the inspection process.  If your flight arrival time is too late, your pet may be held overnight for inspection the following morning. Airlines also have strict regulations regarding the temperature at your departure and destination airports and will not transport animals when the temperatures are too hot or too cold.  A good rule of thumb is to avoid the summer months if you are moving your pet to Hawaii.  If all the regulations are not followed, your pet can be quarantined for up to 120 days and you will be required to pay for his/her stay while incarcerated. On the other hand if you complete all the pre-arrival pet requirements properly your pet will arrive in paradise and you may be reunited with your pet usually before your baggage arrives at the carousel. Our golden retriever Koda’s journey to paradise was completely without incident as has been the experience of our neighbors and clients.

The State of Hawaii Animal Industry Division website has all of the information and forms you will need to apply for and successfully move your pet to Hawaii.  Need help finding your dream home for you and your pet on the Big Island, call me so we can work together to find your personal oasis in paradise.

As a volunteer, I worked on the committee that eliminated the previous mandatory six-month quarantine. The procedures that exist today, when followed, provide a humane alternative to the quarantine nightmare. We love our animals and we bid you a warm Aloha as you start your new life on our Big Island of Hawaii.
